3 Easy Origami Craft Paper Animals for Kids

Celebrate international Origami Day this month by creating one of these cool craft paper origami animals. You will be amazed what you can do with just a piece of paper! We have chosen three simple origami designs for you to try with your little ones. All you need is some coloured paper. Then follow our step-by-step instructions and you will be nimble-fingered in no time.

To make these animals, we recommend using A4 coloured 80gsm paper. You can choose any colour for your animal — just use your imagination.

Craft Paper: Step by Step Guide to making Origami Animals

Are you ready to get started? Ensure you have a clean, flat surface to work on and plenty of craft paper for your creations. For the best results, make sure your folds are very sharp and crease firmly.

1. Origami Piggy

– Time to make : 5 minutes

– Paper size: Square (15cm x 15cm)

– Starting position: Place your paper in front of you so it resembles a diamond shape, colour side down.

– Suggestions: create a piggy family, or stick the faces on to card for a special birthday or thank-you.

Let’s get folding!

Step 1:

Fold the bottom corner up to the top corner. Press firmly along the fold to crease. Unfold. Fold the left corner across to the right corner and crease firmly. Unfold.

Step 2:

Keep your paper open in the diamond position. Now fold the right corner into the middle of the paper. Crease firmly. Keep folded.

Step 3:

Repeat step 2 for the left corner.

Step 4:

Next, fold the paper in half top to bottom. (You have already created the fold). Keep it folded.

Step 5:

The paper in front of you should now have a flat top edge and flat side edges. There should be a pointed tip at the bottom. Now we are going to make the piggy’s snout. Fold the bottom tip back on itself, so the point is roughly in the centre of the paper. Make sure you fold the top and bottom layers together. Keep folded.

Step 6:

To make the tip of the snout, open the pointy tip and fold back the top layer about half a centimetre. This should make a small diamond shape. Can you see the piggy yet?

Step 7:

Next you need to fold the ears. One at a time, fold the top corners diagonally towards the centre line, about half a centimetre.

Step 8:

Now you have your piggy! Draw on the eyes and nostrils. You could give your piggy a little smile also.

2. Origami Craft Rabbit

– Time to make: 5 minutes

– Paper size: Square

– Starting position: Place your paper in front of you so it resembles a diamond shape, colour side down.

– Suggestion: create a rabbit family, or stick the faces on to a fold card to make a special Easter or thank-you card.

Let’s get started!

Step 1:

Fold the paper in half by bringing the bottom corner up to the top corner. Keep it folded.

Step 2:

Now fold in half again. Fold the right corner over to the left corner. This should make a smaller triangle. Crease firmly and unfold.

Step 3:

You should have the long edge of the triangle at the bottom. Fold up the bottom part of the paper about 1cm. (it may look a little like a boat).

Step 4:

Fold the very bottom right corner up to the centre of the top corner. Then fold the very bottom left corner up to the centre of the top corner. Keep it folded.

Step 5:

Now fold the bottom tip up slightly, about 1cm. Keep it folded.

Step 6:

Turn over your paper. You should have two pointy ears at the top and a flat edge along the bottom.

Step 7:

There should be a top corner in between the ears. Fold this (both layers) away from you and tuck it down between the front layer and the ears. The ears should now appear longer.

Step 8:

To finish, draw on your rabbit eyes and a little rabbit nose.

3. Origami Craft Frog

Origami Craft Frog Facts

– Time: 10 minutes

– Paper: Rectangle

– Starting position: Place your paper colour side down. The shortest sides should be at the top and bottom.

– Suggestion: Enjoy frog-jumping challenges with your friends. Hide one inside a birthday card to celebrate the birthday girl or boy.

Let’s get a hop on!

Step 1:

Fold the paper in half left to right. Firmly crease and unfold.

Step 2:

Fold the top right corner over diagonally to meet the left side (the top edge should line up with the left edge of the paper). Crease firmly and unfold.

Step 3:

Repeat step 2 for the left side. Your paper should now have three creases. There should be a central point where all three creases cross over.

Step 4:

From this central point, fold back the top of the paper. Crease firmly and unfold.

Step 5:

You should now have a new horizontal crease. Hold the paper at the ends of this crease. Bring these points down to meet the centre line and then flatten. The creases you have already made should guide the paper into place. Keep folded.

Step 6:

You should now have a triangle sitting on top of a rectangle. Fold both the bottom corners of the triangle up to the top corner. Crease firmly. Keep folded.

Step 7:

You should now be looking at a rectangle shape at the bottom, two small triangles and a diamond shape sitting between the triangles. Using the right corner of the diamond as a guide for the crease, fold the right side of the paper (rectangle and triangle) to the centre line. Crease firmly. Keep folded.

Step 8:

Repeat step 7 for the left side.

Step 9:

Fold the bottom edge up to the centre of the diamond. Crease firmly. Keep folded. You should now be able to see a square shape with one big triangle (made from two little triangles) on top.

Step 10:

Now fold down the top edge of the square to meet the bottom edge.

Step 11:

You have made a jumping frog! Turn over your paper, draw on some eyes and press down on his back to make him jump.

Which is your favourite origami animal?
